Member Minute: Participants Pick a Breakout Group in Zoom

Welcome to EMA’s Member Minute, where I’ll be teaching you an actionable strategy, tip, trick, or hack, to help you meet your enrollment goals, and all that in about a minute.

If you’re hosting a Zoom meeting you might want to use breakout groups. But how do you allow participants to select the group they want to go to? Here are three ways for participants to choose their own breakout group:

  • You can use the ‘Renaming Method’
  • The ‘Link in the Chat’ method
  • Or the ‘Link in the Doc’ method

To use the renaming method show a slide with numbered groups. Ask participants to rename themselves with the number of the group they would like to go to. When you create breakout groups you can put everyone with the same number in the same group.

Another way to do it is the ‘Link in the Chat’ method. In this method, you create additional meetings and post the links to those meeting in the chat. You can use a bit.ly link if you’d like to make it easier.

Finally, you could share a document with meeting participants in view-only mode and include links to other meetings in that document. You could also send the breakout groups by email if you prefer.

Personally I prefer the ‘rename method' for most cases but it’s always good to have a few options until Zoom adds this as a feature!

That’s been your Member Minute, I look forward to connecting with you in the Member Community.
